A wine I’ve rated perfect on more than one occasion, the 2010 Hermitage from Jean-Louis was closed and reticent on this occasion, with lots of red and black fruits, saddle leather, dried herbs and lots of minerality. Full-bodied, tight and reserved at the moment …

Still deep crimson. Gorgeous aroma: some oak sweetness but it does not dominate the fragrant fruit that is both red and black - and seductive. The red fruit lifts out of the glass as the wine opens. Supple, finely spiced and still quite closed on the palate but it’s there in all its peppery, scented glory. Firm, compact tannins, very very fine and finishing nicely dry.

Dark and massive, this features a core bristling with warm plum sauce, black currant, blackberry pâte de fruit and bitter cherry flavors. The loamy edge develops through the finish, studded with charcoal, licorice root and roasted apple wood notes, all underpinned by a broad, dense graphite spine. This will age at a glacial pace. *Collectibles*
